CATARACT

A Cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye, which leads to a decrease in vision. It most commonly occurs due to aging, as lens proteins denature and degrade over time. Environmental factors, such as exposure to UV, can accelerate the formation of cataracts.

Cataracts usually affect patients above 50 years of age. Cataracts are treatable, and the procedure is quick and simple, with a short recovery period.

Symptoms

  • Clouded, blurred or dim vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Diagnosis & Treatment

Cataracts are generally easily diagnosed and treated. If left untreated, they can lead to blindness.

    1. A doctor will consult with you and review your symptoms and medical history

    2. A visual acuity test (vision assessment) will be performed

    3. Dilated pupil, fundus and cataract exams will be conducted on a slit lamp

    4. Treatment is performed via phaco-emulsification. The procedure takes 15 minutes, and the recovery period ranges from 1 to 4 weeks.
